I first began tinkering with saxophones since the days when I had my studio over Chapman
& Hewett music store in the mid 1980's. I used to have Bob Chapman fix up my horns for
me and I spent and countless hours watching this life-long repair tech work on my horns
and those of others. Bob had literally grown up in the store owned by his father, apprenticing
there from a very young age, and when I knew him he had nearly 50 years of experience.
It was a great education just watching him work. But I gradually got into doing the work
myself, at first with Bob's advice and tools and eventually on my own. After his passing I
found Ken Fornetran, a sax tech in Toronto who is considered one of the best in the world.
For major work I’d go to him, and soon we became friends. Once again I was able to watch a
true master at work. In the past few years I took the next step and learned to completely overhaul saxophones and acquired the necessary tools. Helping me through this stage of development was Andrew Lusher, not only a fantastc musician but seemingly a genius at
whatever he tries, instrument repair being no exception!
I love working on horns and although my perfectionist’s attitude makes me perhaps a little
slower than some to finish a job, my true desire to be attentive to the most minute detail is
worth the wait. Certainly there are some shops in the world where quantity is secondary to
quality. For me ... that will never be an option. Don't get me wrong; if you are in a hurry I
will work around the clock to get your horn ready. But I won't cut corners to finish any job
as just "good enough".
